The BLT: Summer Preview
It’s hard to believe that summer will be here in just a few short weeks. Maybe it was the cool and rainy spring, or perhaps it’s the increasingly frenetic pace at which life seems to move. In any event, I wanted to share a few items in this edition of The BLT that will help make your summer a little sweeter and maybe a little more fun. Enjoy!
Based on the recommendation of a co-worker, I’ve been enjoying Five Sisters: The Langhornes of Virginia lately. The book is the true story of five sisters born in Virginia around the Reconstruction period, most of whom go on to marry into wealthy families and lead interesting lives in America and Europe. One sister, Irene, became the inspiration for the Gibson Girl, and another, Nancy, married into the Astor family and became Britain’s first female MP. While the writing is at times disorganized, the story is entertaining enough to be a good, light non-fiction read, perfect for summer.
Subscription boxes are super popular now, and are available in almost any theme imaginable, from gaming and geek-themed boxes to ones for kids, pets, and beauty products. I’ve been receiving BIRCHBOX, which pioneered the subscription box concept and provides samples of high-end beauty products, for several months now. However, I wanted more variety and a cruelty-free guarantee, so I just signed up for the slightly pricier but larger ConsciousBox, which sends eco-friendly beauty, lifestyle, and food samples in a recyclable box. They also have gluten-free and vegan options, too. I have yet to receive my first ConsciousBox, but am super excited to see what’s in it!
Google announced a couple months ago that it will be discontinuing Google Reader, its popular RSS feed reader, on July 1st. I’ve been looking for a replacement, and discovered Feedly, which I really like. It offers several different visual layouts, and management of feeds is very easy. Even better, if you try Feedly before July 1st, you will be able to migrate seamlessly from Google Reader once goes kaput.
What did you think about this BLT? What are you looking forward to this summer? What’s on your summer reading list?
